Keywords in C

Matrix multiplication

There is a close analogy between learning the English language and learning the C language. We start learning English by learning about alphabets, further create words and sentences by combining the words, Similarly, in C we learn about tokens which are the smallest individual unit in a program, they can either be a keyword or a string literal or, any identifier.

C Keywords
  • Keywords are the words whose meaning has been explained already to the C compiler.
  • The keywords cannot be used as variable names moreover if we do so, we are trying to assign a new meaning to the keyword.
  • Keywords are also known as “reserved words”.
  • There are only 32 keywords available in C.
autobreakcasechar
constcontinuedefaultdo
doubleelseenumextern
floatforgotoif
intlongregisterreturn
shortsignedsizeofstatic
structswitchtypedefunion
unsignedvoidvolatilewhile

Example: In the below-given code int and return are the keywords.

int main()
{
    int a=5;
    printf("Value of a is : %d",a);
    return 0;
}
